Franck Ribéry says he wants to stay at Bayern Munich and has also spoken about the recent ‘golden steak’ controversy.

Ribéry is out of contract at the end of the season and it is not yet known whether the 35-year-old will sign an extension or move onto pastures new.

The Frenchman is expected to sit down with the club to discuss his future in the coming weeks but in the meantime, he has made his position clear.

“I would never cheat on Bayern,” Ribéry told French outlet L’Equipe.

Just over a month ago, the winger made negative headlines after a video was posted to his Instagram of him tucking into a golden steak at the restaurant of Turkish butcher Nusret Gökçe, aka Salt Bae.

But though Ribéry was accused of being gauche or crass, the man himself admits he still can’t understand what all the furore was about.

“I do what I want in my private life, I was invited there by the boss, and many other players have gone to his house to eat at his house, and I did that,” he said.

In 2013, despite helping Bayern win the Champions League, Ribéry missed out on the Ballon d’Or, finishing narrowly behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in third place.

And he says it’s a near miss that still haunts him to this day.

“I saw myself as the Ballon d’Or. It’s the truth,” he said.

“Even today, I think I deserved it. I still haven’t digested it. I did everything to have it.

“I ticked all the boxes. I won all I could win with Bayern. I couldn’t do better! I did a very, very, very big personal year.

“I had nothing to envy Ronaldo or Messi for, that year. I really took a big hit on the head. I experienced this third place as a terrible injustice.

“I asked the question 10,000 times: why not me? The more I thought, the more I was disgusted. All was not clear.”
