According to multiple sources, Major League Soccer free agent Ozzie Alonso will be headed to Minnesota United in the coming days.

Though Sam Stejskal reported the news on Monday, more details have emerged which reveal that the deal will be much more complicated than originally thought.

More recent reports state that Alonso is set to make $650,000 (€570,000) annually over a two year period.

However, according to the MLS collective bargaining agreement, an out-of-contract player whose salary budget charge goes beyond the maximum base salary for “the immediately preceding league season, and whose current team did not make him an offer in excess of the maximum salary budget charge, may go through free agency provided that he agrees to a new (contract) that results in his salary budget charge being less than the maximum salary budget charge.”

In layman’s terms, Minnesota United cannot offer Alonso more than $530,000 (€460,000) annually (currently the maximum budget charge as a free agent), and Alonso will first have to pass through waivers in order to complete the deal.

Some sources indicate that Minnesota have already agreed to a trade with Orlando City to move to the top of the waiver order.

In 2018, Alonso earned $1.1m in base salary (€960,000) and $1.142m (€1m) in total compensation with Seattle.
