Former Paris Saint-Germain and France goalkeeper Bernard Lama fears Gianluigi Buffon isn’t suited to the Ligue 1 champions’ style of play.

Buffon joined PSG on a free transfer earlier this week following 17 years at Juventus and though Lama believes the 40-year-old will bring a wealth of experience to the table, he also fears he may struggle to adapt to his new surroundings.

“First of all, PSG have recruited a great champion in Gianluigi,” Lama told France Football.

“His profile worries me, though, as he is not suited to PSG – namely in terms of possession and playing high up the pitch.

“To play this way, you need a goalkeeper who pushes up. This is not Buffon’s style. He never played that way in Italy. Plus, his ability with the ball at his feet is average.

“Also, Juventus did not offer him a new contract. … [But] PSG wanted a dressing room boss, so in that respect, it is a good move — especially on a free.”

Lama spent eight years at PSG over two separate spells, during which time he won the Ligue 1 title, two Coupe de Frances and the Cup Winners’ Cup.

The 55-year-old also believes Buffon’s arrival at the Parc des Princes could signal the end of Alphonse Areola’s time at the club.

“Alphonse needs to decide if he wants to be second choice to a serial winner or to go elsewhere,” he said.

“That said, I cannot imagine him going much higher – it is also a question of character.”
