A night after Fluminense were eliminated from the Copa Sudamericana semi-finals by fellow Brazilian club Atlético Paranaense, the club has decided to sack manager Marcelo Oliveira.

Fluminense’s assistant coach Fábio Moreno will take over on a caretaker basis.

Oliveira replaced Abel Braga on 22 June of this season after the Rio-based club had lost four straight matches to find themselves on just 14 points after 12 matches heading into the World Cup break.

Oliveira finished his 33-game career in charge of Fluminense with 12 wins, eight draws, and 13 losses in all competitions.

The announcement comes just ahead of Fluminense’s last match of the season against 17th-placed América-MG, who need a result to stay in the top-flight.

The timing is quite interesting, given that Fluminense are currently in 14th place and only two points clear of the relegation zone.

Flu could still qualify for the first round of the 2019 Copa Sudamericana if they either jump above Ceará or Corinthians in the standings.

Though they will stay up if they achieve at least a draw this weekend, Flu could go down to the second division with a loss in addition to a Chapecoense win and a Vasco result.

Oliveira won back-to-back Brasileirão titles with Cruzeiro in 2013 and 2014.
