Flamengo 2-2 Ajax (4-3 penalties)

Flamengo started the 2019 season against Ajax in the first round of the Florida Cup.

Thanks to Matheus Uribe and a great performance by goalkeeper Diego Alves, the rubro-negro drew 2-2 with the Dutch club before taking all three points on penalties.

Ajax new boy Lisandro Magallán, playing in his first match since arriving from Boca Juniors, gifted Flamengo the victory after sending his penalty into orbit.

Ajax opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Klaas-Jan Huntelaar received the ball after some stellar build-up play and guided his effort into the corner past Diego Alves.

However, Flamengo equalised three minutes later, with Uribe chipping the goalkeeper after receiving a fantastic pass from Everton Ribeiro.

After a pair of Diego Alves saves, Zakaria Labyad got free in the area and put Ajax in front in the 33rd minute.

Diego Alves made another set of fantastic saves to keep the score at 2-1 and Flamengo would be rewarded for his efforts just before the half when Uribe pounced on Diego’s rebound for his second goal of the match.

The second half was much less exciting after the teams both made a plethora of substitutes.

Noa Lang had a chance to win the match for Ajax in stoppage time, but his effort rang against the crossbar and the match went directly to penalties.

Shootout results:

Ajax: Labyad, Lassina Traore, Dani De Wit, scored, Joël Veltman hit the post, Magallán skied his effort over the bar.

Flamengo: Piris da Motta, Rodinei, Miguel Trauco, and Orlando Berrío all converted.

Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 São Paulo

SPFC were outdone by a second-half own goal and fell 2-1 to Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.

In the eighth minute, Bruno Peres conceded a penalty after he took down Jetro Willems in the box.

Croatian World Cup sensation Ante Rebić stepped up and converted to give the Germans a 1-0 lead.

At the half-hour mark, Jonathan de Guzmán nearly doubled Frankfurt’s lead but new goalkeeper Tiago Volpi, who made his debut after arriving on loan from Liga MX side Querétaro, made a nice save.

Nine minutes into the second half, SPFC finally gained some attacking momentum and equalised through Nenê.

After some nice play down the middle, Igor Liziero played the ball out wide to Diego Souza, who found Nenê to make it 1-1.

However, the score wouldn’t last even 10 minutes as Frankfurt took the lead after an own goal.

Second-half SPFC goalkeeper Jean initially made a great save, though the ball rebounded off Igor Vinícius and into their own net.

The Florida Cup concludes on Saturday when Ajax face off against São Paulo, while Flamengo and Eintracht Frankfurt will do battle an hour after the conclusion of the first match.
