“I’m due to go back to Rome next week to get the green light,” said Lejeune. “Then after that [getting the green light], it will be another week or two until I am training back with the squad.”

The Frenchman suffered a season-ending knee injury against Crystal Palace last April and since then has been rehabbing the injury.

“I began doing a bit of ball work after the first month in Rome,” added the 28-year-old. “Two months after the surgery I was working with the ball and starting to kick out on the pitch that the clinic has.”

Lejeune is eager to return to the pitch, after watching from the stands as Newcastle were held to a 0-0 draw against Brighton, believes he can come back fitter and stronger.

“I have a good strong mentality and now after these two injuries I think that my mindset is even stronger,” he added. “I think that I have done everything that I possibly could have done to make a full recovery in as short a period as possible.”
