Flamengo president Rodolfo Landim revealed to Fox Sports on Friday that manager Jorge Jesus has asked for a salary out of the club’s price range.

The club and Jesus are looking to renew his contract, which ends at the end of May this year. Landim, however, stated that he is still negotiating with the 65-year-old.

“I consider Jesus to be one of the greatest coaches in the world, and consequently, I think he is worth a lot of money, yes.

“The problem is whether Flamengo can afford what he wants to receive and he understood that, for him to stay at Flamengo, he will have to adapt to Flamengo’s ability to pay.

“But saying whether he is worth it or not worth it,… I think he is worth all the money in the world!

“Unfortunately, Flamengo doesn’t have (that kind of money) to pay him. But, for me, he is almost a Messi among football managers in the world.

“How much is Messi worth? Messi, as I have seen, earns €55m net per year. Considering Spain’s high social costs, he costs much more than that.

“Would Flamengo like to have Messi? I would love to, but we can’t afford him.

“It is obvious that, if we are negotiating, it is because the request (from Jesus) went far beyond Flamengo’s capacity. I won’t hide it, but he knows that.

“I have a high expectation that we will reach an agreement and I wouldn’t be saying this here if I didn’t. You can believe me.

“We have already started conversations with him and his agent. Conversations are well underway. We have a contract until the end of May, beginning of June, and we are sure that we will reach a common denominator with him.

“He wants to continue with Flamengo, and we want to continue with him. What remains is to work out the last details, and I am sure that this will end up happening.”

Jorge Jesus has the rare distinction of having won more trophies (five) than matches lost (four) as manager of Flamengo.
