Flamengo’s first-team may be on vacation, but the board is still working hard to ensure that the club are still playing at a very high level next season.
Flamengo have already confirmed the signings of striker Pedro Rocha and long-time Santos centre-back Gustavo Henrique, while exciting 18-year-old striker Thiago from Náutico will link up with the Flamengo U-23s.
Now, according to Goal Brasil, Flamengo vice-president Marcos Braz has sat down with the agent of Lille defensive midfielder Thiago Maia.
After coming through the Santos academy and playing three years at the senior level, Marcelo Bielsa brought the Olympic Gold Medal winner to France for €14m.
Flamengo nearly signed the 22-year-old over the summer, but Lille would not approve the transfer. Flamengo then went on to sign Gerson from Roma for €11.8m, who went on to have a spectacular year for the rubro-negro.
In a recent interview with Esporte Interativo, Thiago Maia confirmed his desire to play with Flamengo and believes that he should be living the dream that Gerson got to live in 2019.
“Flamengo was very close to signing me but there was something that did not work, the club did not release me. Maybe in January, something could happen.
“What Gerson is living I think I was supposed to be living. As I did not go there, he ended up going.”
The defensive midfielder has been overlooked in the Lille side this season, making just four appearances totalling 111 minutes.
The player’s current deal expires in summer 2022.
