In a tight match, Éverton Cardoso da Silva scored a header at the league-leaders to give São Paulo the road win.

The Tricolor Paulista traveled to the Maracanã with the intention of cutting into Flamengo’s lead at the top of the Série A standings. São Paulo did just that thanks to a goal from former Red-black attacker Éverton in a match marked by player confrontations.

The first half produced few chances for either side. Ecuadorian winger Joao Rojas cut inside to shoot but the effort was saved by Diego Alves. On the other end, Flamengo struck the wood-work through Lucas Paquetá’s header in the 42nd minute.

Rojas sent a cross into the area from the right flank a couple minutes into the second half. Éverton beat Flamengo’s Renê to the ball and subsequently beat Alves to give the visitors the lead in the 48th minute.

The home side tried to respond but Sidão saved Paolo Guerrero’s headed effort.

Making his debut for Flamengo, Fernando Uribe squandered good chances to equalize. In the 65th minute, he missed a practically open net. A minute later he nodded a cross from Paquetá into the ground but Sidão moved well to make the save.

The Carioca side pressed for an equalizer up to the finish whistle. In the 82nd minute, Diego Ribas tried his luck from outside the area but could not manage to tie the game.

São Paulo cut Flamengo’s lead to just a single point in the table. The Red-blacks host Botafogo on Saturday at the Maracanã, while the Tricolor plays their rivalry match against Corinthians for match-day 14.
