Fresh blood is needed badly at Manchester United.

They are in dire need of an injection of talent and major cash must be spent.

Sunday’s defeat to Everton was one of the worst performances in the post-Ferguson era, but who should come in to revitalise the squad?

Kalidou Koulibaly

This position wouldn’t have been as big a problem if the club had followed solid advice.

“We turned down [Matthijs] De Ligt. God knows how many [scouting] reports we had on him,” former head of youth recruitment Derek Langley told the Manchester Evening News.

The Ajax ace is now well out of their price range, as are other mooted options such as Milan Škriniar and Toby Alderweireld.

Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid return could convince Raphaël Varane to stay, leaving Kalidou Koulibaly as the best option.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is likely to play hard ball but the 27-year-old is worthy of the investment.

Leadership and authority is badly needed at the heart of defence and he would provide exactly that.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

The fact that Ashley Young or Victor Lindelöf are starting games at right-back is an indication of the mess at the club.

An established talent is needed for that position badly in the summer, particularly with Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian departing.

Dani Alves is out of contract this summer but a 35-year-old isn’t a long-term solution, even if he would be a lower-cost one.

It seems Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s willingness to invest in young, English talent could lead to a move for Crystal Palace’s Wan-Bissaka.

Left-back is an issue too, but Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot can cope for now.

Declan Rice

The West Ham midfielder is reportedly one of the players who is on Solskajer’s wishlist.

It would be a shrewd addition at relatively lower price, which would allow them to spend big in other areas.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a phenomenal campaign which has seen him nominated for PFA Young Player of the Year.

He shows no signs of being fazed by anything, a mentality he needed after swapping international allegiances.

His hunger, energy and fearlessness in and out of possession would be a fine fit at Old Trafford.

Gareth Bale

ESPN report that Jadon Sancho is United’s top target for improvement out wide.

But the youngster has stated how happy he is at Dortmund and insisted he wants to remain beyond the summer.

That leaves United being forced to take a risk and turn to a man who seems to be linked in every window.

His fraught relationship with Zidane will surely spell the end of his Real Madrid career and they could be willing to take a hit to offload the Welshman.

Nonetheless, the numbers involved would still be staggering and his injury history is a big concern.

But if he can return to England and replicate his Tottenham form, it would be well worth the gamble.

Mauro Icardi

The Argentine could prove to be the bargain of the summer with a move to Manchester.

His value has plummeted due to his rift with Inter, who could be forced to accept a lower-than-value deal to sell him this summer.

That is where United must swoop and strengthen their attack with a penalty box predator of immense quality.

There are few players in the world as lethal as Icardi when a chance presents itself in the area.

His wife and agent Wanda Nara does pose a problem both in negotiations and personality but that is a necessary evil in this case.
