Proposals are in place for the first game to be played between Barcelona and Girona, who have agreed to play a league fixture in Miami this January.

However, the league and the clubs require permission from Fifa and the Spanish FA for the switch to go ahead. That seems problematic.

According to Marca, both Fifa and the Spanish FA opposed the plans in a meeting on Wednesday. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is also said to be against the proposal, fearing a match between two Catalan teams could be used for PR in the Catalan fight for independence.

Fifa are said to be concerned by the prospect of business being put ahead of football, while the Spanish FA are against the ideas as it poses a threat to fans’ best interests and the integrity of the competition.
