Though they were pegged to be big strugglers under Steve Bruce this season, Newcastle enjoyed a 2-1 win over Southampton on Sunday to give them their second-straight win and put on 22 points.
Though Newcastle are in 11th place, they are only two points behind fifth-placed Manchester United.
It was Federico Fernández who was the unlikeliest of heroes as he scored the 87th-minute winner, bagging just his 13th professional goal in well over 300 matches of club football.
After the match, the Argentina international called on his side to keep the momentum going through the tough December period.
“We are working hard to keep our shape. We feel okay. We took our chances and they are great points.
“We need to enjoy this period and build a winning mentality. You never know where we can arrive at the end of the season, but we take it game by game.”
The Magpies will close out 2019 with matches against Burnley, Crystal Palace, United, and Everton.
