FC Porto: 2015/16 season preview

FC Porto experts Nuno Moreira and Carlos Martinho have kindly predicted the new season for Onefootball. Here's their 2015/16 season preview.

Record Primeira Liga winners Benfica celebrated their 34th title win at the end of the 2014/15 season, a season in which they finished three points ahead of arch-rivals FC Porto and nine ahead of fellow Lisbon club Sporting. Scoring a whopping 86 league goals, which meant a +70 goal difference – ahead of Chelsea, Juventus and PSG and behind only Barcelona and Real Madrid in Europe’s top five leagues – Benfica will be looking to improve on that this season following the acquisition of Raúl Jiménez from Atletico and loan move for Fulham’s Konstantinos Mitroglou.

Many eyes will be on Porto, though, who have steadied their defence – not that they needed to, conceding just 13 goals in the last campaign – by bringing in Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas and Giannelli Imbula from Marseille. But having lost Jackson Martinez and Danilo, it’s perhaps worth last season’s runners-up to invest in attack.

This season we won’t be watching Gil Vicente and Penafiel in Portugal’s premier division, but we’re happy to have Tondela and União Madeira take their place.

Our Porto experts Nuno Moreira and Carlos Martinho have predicted what the 2015/16 season will look like for the Primeira Liga and for FC Porto. Below you will find their predictions for the season under #MySeasonPreview and you’ll find their ideal Porto lineup for the upcoming season.

FC Porto 2015/16 Season Preview

Porto will win the league this season and Tondela and União da Madeira will be relegated. We can see Sporting being a surprise and Ricardo Sá Pinto (of Belenenses) being the first sacked. Jonas from Benfica will finish the league’s leading goalscorer.

FC Porto 2015/16 Best XI

Porto’s Top Scorer?

Nuno: Aboubakar. He will want to make supporters forget Jackson and became himself a reference at Porto.
Carlos: I think the club’s top scorer isn’t even in the squad. Porto will buy a striker which, probably, will enter in the first XI. If not, I think Aboubakar will get the prize.

Porto’s Key Player?

Nuno: Iker Casillas. A superstar football player. He can make a difference inside and off the pitch. It’s a signing that clearly brings a plus to the Portuguese league.
Carlos: Gianelli Imbula. Cost us €20M, but what a player. A great box-to-box, Paul Pogba-lish.

Which player does Porto need to get rid of?

Nuno: Quaresma, and it already happened. He’s a excellent football player, but he had problems with the manager last season. At the beginning of this season he gave an interview that didn’t go well with Porto managing structure, as so, he’s been sold.
Carlos: Hector Herrera. We can’t will anything with him on the field. Too unstable.
