After another bad performance by Corinthians in the Brasileirão, manager Fábio Carille acknowledged that his side have rarely played well this year and need to drastically improve in order to qualify for the Copa Libertadores.
Just a couple weeks ago, Timão were well in the title race, just eight points behind leaders Flamengo.
However, after this weekend’s loss against rivals São Paulo, Corinthians are 15 points behind and are holding onto fourth place on goal difference alone.
São Paulo are level on 43 points, in fifth place while Grêmio hold onto the final Libertadores play-off place on 41 points. Internacional (39), Bahia (38), Goiás (36), and Athletico-PR (35) are threatening to move into the top six as well.
“I think from 63 games this year, we haven’t even played 10 of them well,” Carille said after the loss.
“Even at the Campeonato Paulista (which Corinthians won), I have spoken several times, we have had difficulty playing.
“If it doesn’t get better, it won’t go to the Copa Libertadores.”
Corinthians will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to face ninth-placed Goiás.
