Former Germany international Thomas Strunz has insisted that Joachim Löw was wrong to pick Manuel Neuer for this summer’s World Cup.
The Bayern Munich goalkeeper missed almost the entirety of last term with a foot injury and was in a race against time to make it for the tournament in Russia.
Die Mannschaft had a world class back-up in Marc-Andre ter Stegen who emerged as one of Barcelona’s most important players in 2017/18.
However, Löw still opted for veteran keeper for all three of Germany’s World Cup matches.
And Strunz, who played over 40 times for the national team between 1990 and 1999, is adamant that was a mistake.
“Low should not have picked Manuel Neuer because it has led to an absurd situation,” he told Sport1.
