Former FA Technical Director Dan Ashworth has claimed that there are six names in the frame to succeed Gareth Southgate as England boss.

Ashworth left his role at the Football Association over the summer after seeing the Three Lions reach the World Cup semi-final for the first time in nearly 30 years.

The future looks bright for the national team, with youngsters like Jadon Sancho, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Declan Rice all starring for their clubs.

England could win their first piece of silverware since 1966 this summer with the Nations League finals, and there’s a real chance that Southgate’s side go into Euro 2020 as one of the favourites.

But Ashworth has revealed that the bigwigs at St George’s Park are already looking at a succession plan, and have six names in the hat for the top job.

Current Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd and England Women’s coach Phil Neville are two in the frame.

Former midfielders Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are also being lined up as potential national team managers.

While Sean Dyche and Eddie Howe – two men working wonders in the Premier League – are also in contention.

Speaking to the Times, Ashworth said: “It’s our job to make sure we have enough people on the radar that are English-qualified coaches, that hold the right attributes.

“Whether they are in the system like Phil [England women’s head coach] and Aidy [England Under-21 manager], or out of the system like Steven, Frank, Eddie, Sean.

“We have the right relationships with them so, should the time come when Gareth moves on, we have a bigger and better pool of English coaches that are able and interested in taking the job.”

England get their Euro 2020 qualification underway this week when they host Czech Republic on Friday.
