Jordan Pickford has claimed that being England’s first-choice goalkeeper makes him more susceptible to criticism.

The former Sunderland stopper was in the firing line again this weekend after letting Christian Benteke’s equaliser slip under him in Everton’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace.

It was the latest in what even some Toffees fans believe is a string of errors by the 25-year-old.

But Pickford hit back at his detractors.

“I think the press and everybody; the punters – look at Gary Neville – they just want to come for England players,” Pickford said.

“Everyone gets stick. Some get a lot more praise than others. That’s part of being an England player.

“Everyone hates you, for some reason. I just get on with it. You have got to live with it, you have got to learn. I know what I am capable of and I know what I am good at.

“It is what it is. Look at Joe Hart when he was number one. He got pelters every week.”

Pickford would appear to protest too much.

He’s not being singled out because he’s the England goalkeeper. He’s being rightly criticised for basic goalkeeping mistakes.

The less he makes of them, the less he’ll be ‘hated’.
