Amid rumors that placed Edson Alvarez at Ajax, PSV, and Celtic amongst other European clubs, América were able to renew the contract of the 21-year-old until 2022.

Since debuting with the first-team in 2016, the centre-back has enjoyed a meteoric rise and has already earned 22 caps with the Mexican national team and has Liga MX and Copa MX trophies to his name.

The youngster was a major part of Mexico’s World Cup side in Russia, appearing in all four matches, starting in three of them.

On Tuesday, Alvarez was called up once again to represent the national team at the Gold Cup, along with team-mate Jorge Sánchez, who only made his El Tri debut in March.

With Álvarez already commanding rumoured fees of over €10m, this could potentially be one of América’s most crucial signings in the history of the club.
