The Brazilian raised eyebrows after joining City for €35m in 2017 – a then record fee for a goalkeeper – but quickly silenced his critics under Pep Guardiola.

More is expected of goalkeepers in the modern game and Ederson relishes that responsibility, reiterating how important it is for him to keep a cool head.

“My only thoughts are to play in the most tranquil way possible,” he told the club’s official website.

“I believe I need to be one of the calmest players in the team, because if I make a mistake, there isn’t anyone else that can defend it.

“So, for that reason, I need to be the coldest figure in the team as well as to try and predict moves before they happen, calculate and think.

“I always try to act naturally, and to be calm and tranquil. I’m not extravagant, but obviously it depends on the atmosphere of the game.

“In some matches you can’t control the emotions, but I act very normal and I’m very tranquil, in fact I think I’m one of the most tranquil players in the team.”

The 24-year-old is expected to start as City host Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday.
