During Flamengo’s 2-1 win over Serie D side Bangu to kick off their Campeonato Carioca campaign on Sunday, the crowd at the Maracanã spent a large portion of the match begging Diego to stay.

It appears the fans got their wish.

According to Globo Sport, Diego’s representatives and Flamengo have reached an agreement and are now fine-tuning the details to sign the soon-to-be 34-year-old midfielder through December 2020.

“Yeah, it’s done,” Diego’s father said over the phone. “We are aligning some points so that we can finalise the contract.

“This week we will finish this, God willing. It won’t go past the end of the week.”

According to the report, Diego’s salary will not increase and he will not receive a bonus for renewing his contract.

Orlando City had offered Diego a three-year contract that would have provided a significant salary increase.

However, Diego’s first choice was always to stay with the rubro-negro.

In two-and-a-half years at Flamengo, the 34-time Brazilian international midfielder has scored 22 goals and provided six assists in 70 matches in the Brasileirão.

Diego started his life in football at Santos and saw his career take him to Porto, Werder Bremen, Juventus, Wolfsburg, Atlético Madrid, and Fenerbahçe before his return to Brazil.
