DFB admits Joshua Kimmich should have been sent off against Dortmund | OneFootball

Both the head of German referees and the head of the VAR project have admitted that a big mistake was made during Saturday’s DFL Supercup.

In the 76th minute of the game at the Westfalenstadion, Bayern Munich full-back Joshua Kimmich was caught stamping on the foot of Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.

Sancho had to be substituted with an injury and Kimmich was shown a yellow card for the offence, but speaking on Monday, DFB referee chief Lutz Michael Fröhlich admitted the Bayern player should have been sent off.

“Whoever steps on his opponent’s foot like that, by the rules, has to receive a red card,” Fröhlich admitted during the ‘Media workshop & presentation of the video-assist-center’ in Cologne.

Furthermore, VAR head Jochen Drees confirmed that the Video Assistant should also have intervened in the incident.

“Video Assistant Robert Schröder made an error in the formal process,” said Drees.

“He should have sent referee Daniel Siebert to the review area so he could to come to his own conclusion because he didn’t have full awareness of the situation. Instead, he erroneously rated the situation himself from the video cellar as worthy of a yellow caution.

“Maybe it was down to the fact that this sort of offence during a regular tackle on the pitch would result in a yellow card.

“This, however, was violent conduct despite the low intensity. This is why the evaluation by the VAR was incorrect.”
