USMNT full-back DeAndre Yedlin is excited about the future of football in the US.

The 25-year-old is hardly a veteran himself but is now one of the more experienced players in the USA squad.

Yedlin’s 57 caps is the second most of the 23 players called up for this month’s international break, only behind the 131 of 31-year-old Michael Bradley.

Speaking this week, the Newcastle defender has admitted he has high hopes for the future.

“Now that we have a base and just a stable platform you’ll really see an unbelievable growth,” Yedlin said, “especially with these guys.

“This group of players, and a couple of the other younger guys, this could be a golden generation for the US I think.

“A big part of that is players taking that step early and getting over to Europe.”

He is, of course, referring to the likes of Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie.

The midfielders are both regulars in the Bundesliga and they are no longer alone as young Americans in Germany’s top flight.

Tyler Adams, also in the squad, made the move to RB Leipzig in January.

Then there’s Josh Sargent, the 19-year-old striker who is slowly making a mark at Werder Bremen. Sargent, along with fellow young forward Timothy Weah, isn’t in this month’s senior squad.

But both players have made an impression at the start of their international careers.

Yedlin is convinced that leaving America at a young age is the key.

“I don’t like to talk badly on MLS, and I’m not talking badly on MLS,” he insisted.

“But I think just making that step and getting out of your comfort zone, once you do step out of your comfort zone and then you do find some success it brings even that much more confidence to you.

“That’s what Weston has experienced.

“You see Christian, you see these guys, they’re playing with so much confidence, which I don’t think we’ve seen so much with younger players before.”

Of the current squad, nine play their club football outside of MLS, while eight of those are in Europe.

That number is only likely to go up in the coming years.
