Gylfi Sigurdsson’s late equaliser at Old Trafford on Sunday was beautiful, a perfect free-kick. You can’t blame David De Gea at all.
Or can you?
There is no way the Spaniard could have got to the free-kick but Ander Herrera would have if he was on the post.
The midfielder pre-empted Sigurdsson’s strike, running back to the post to head any goal-bound effort off the line. Then he moved as he was, as the replay behind the goal shows, was waved away by his goalkeeper.
Maybe if Sigurdsson took the free-kick another 30 times he wouldn’t have hit it so sweetly but on this occasion he did and, though he couldn’t have saved the strike, De Gea’s decision-making appears to have cost his side two points.
In the race for Champions League qualification, those two points could be costly and only increase the pressure on Thursday’s Europa League semi-final.
Unfortunately for United, two injuries on Sunday won’t help the cause against Celta Vigo.
