Chelsea defender David Luiz has issued a staunch defence of under-fire boss Maurizio Sarri.

Despite guiding the Blues to third in the Premier League and the upcoming Europa League final, there are suggestions Sarri could leave the club after just one season and return to his native Italy, with Juventus thought to be his most likely destination.

The 60-year-old has so far failed to win the fans over with his style of football and came in for heavy criticism at various stages of the season, particularly following the 6-0 defeat away at Manchester City in February.

But Luiz believes the former Napoli boss has actually done a fine job during his first season in English football.

“I think he is doing amazing, he is doing a great season,” said the Brazilian, as quoted by BT Sport.

“We started very well, everyone was very excited saying Chelsea are going to fight for the title.

“Then we had some ups and downs but we finished the season, especially in the Premier League, very well and we have another opportunity to win this competition.

“He is trying to teach us his philosophy of football. It is part of the job. He has to try to teach us to understand his mind, the way he looks at football, and I think he is doing great.

“If you think one day you already know everything that is when you are going to fall down. It doesn’t matter what job; footballer, coach, we need to try to learn and to improve every single day.

“Football is about this. Big clubs have pressure and if you don’t want pressure don’t be at the big clubs.”

Chelsea face Arsenal in Baku on Wednesday and Luiz insists both teams will be going all out to win the Europa League, despite the fact the Gunners must win in order to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

“It’s going to be a massive game, a great final against a fantastic team,” added the defender.

“Will they be more motivated? I don’t think so. We are motivated a lot to win this trophy.

“It’s a big trophy, Chelsea’s a big club. We have pressure, Arsenal have pressure.”
