David Beckham has joined his former Class of ’92 team-mates by becoming a shareholder of Salford City FC.

The 43-year-old former England captain has purchased a 10% stake in the club and follows Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes in becoming part owners.

Speaking after the announcement, Beckham said: “It’s a proud moment for me to join Peter Lim and the Class of ’92 lads as an owner of Salford City.

“My early years in Manchester were spent in Salford, I grew up there in many ways so to be able to finally join the lads today is a great feeling.

“Salford City has achieved so much success in a short space of time, the fans are in incredible and I’m really excited to be spending more time in Salford again.”

The group of ex-Manchester United players bought Salford City in 2014 when they were still in Premier League Division North. They have since been promoted to the National League and could soon break into the EFL.

A statement released by the Class of ’92 welcomed Beckham onboard.

“From the very beginning we wanted David to be involved and be with us on this incredible journey however circumstances and commitments didn’t allow that,” read the statement.

“Now the time is right and it’s another exciting chapter in Salford City’s history.

“It is important to emphasise that nothing will change in the day to day operations but to have us all together was always the vision.”

Beckham already owns American club Inter Miami, who will join Major League Soccer in 2020.

According to Gary Neville, the former Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan and PSG midfielder plans to attend his first Salford City match in the next “next two or three weeks”.

The ‘Class of 92’ now own 60% of the club, with the remaining 40% being held by Singapore businessman Peter Lim.
