VAR stole the headlines over the weekend as Corinthians and Flamengo played to a dramatic 1-1 draw at the Arena Corinthians, with Gabigol scoring the equaliser in the 86th minute.

After the match, Danilo Avelar likened the result to a defeat.

“We did not deserve to have lost, especially in this way,” Avelar told reporters.

“So it hurts a little to come out with this draw, but we have to praise and acknowledge our great match too.

“Intensity is important. Today’s football is no secret, you have to be intense and bother your opponent.

“Everyone must play with the same mindset and be alert when defending. Today we imposed this philosophy and would have won the vast majority of games playing like this.”

Corinthians, who are in ninth place in the Brasileirão table on 16 points, have started preparing for their Copa Sudamericana round-of-16 clash against Uruguay’s Montevideo Wanderers.

The first leg will take place in São Paulo this Thursday, with the second leg taking place a week later following Sunday’s contest at Fortaleza.
