With the arrival of Uruguayan defender Bruno Méndez, Corinthians have now exceeded the limit of foreign players allowed in their squad.
For national competitions, Brazilian clubs are allowed to name up to five players born outside Brazil in their roster.
Corinthians now have six: Méndez (Uruguay), Ángelo Araos (Chile), Mauro Boselli (Argentina), Sergio Díaz and Ángel Romero (Paraguay) and Junior Sornoza (Ecuador).
Romero’s situation, however, remains undefined. The winger had been heavily linked with a move away from Timão but recent reports suggested he has actually resumed negotiations with the club over a new contract.
The 26-year-old’s current deal is due to expire in July this year.
If not Romero then Corinthians made need to let one of their other foreign players go.
However, the limitation only applies to national competitions – Copa do Brasil, Brasileirão and state championships.
The Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana do not follow the same rules.
