Sport Recife took the lead but Corinthians stormed to victory late in the second half.

Corinthians had gone four games in all competitions without victory heading into Sunday’s encounter and looked destined to add to that tally before Danilo Avelar’s late game-winner.

Hernane won a penalty after he appeared to get upended by Corinthians centre back Henrique while reaching for Sander’s cross. Sport Recife’s striker placed his shot down the middle to beat Cássio Ramos and take the lead in the 22nd minute.

Goalkeeper Magrão prevented the home side from equalising before half-time with a diving save to block Douglas Augusto’s effort from distance in the 43rd minute.

Corinthian’s tested Magrão again shortly after the intermission and ultimately found the breakthrough after 14 minutes.

With as many as twelve players between him and the goalkeeper when the ball bounced out to him, Jádson lobbed a rebound over the mass of bodies and into the far post.

Sport almost responded the very next minute but Morato’s right-footed drive skidded just wide of the far post. Despite pressure from the visitors, Corinthians scored a well-worked goal to complete the turn-around.

In the 89th minute, Clayson sent a cross into the box from the right channel that forward Ángel Romero nodded on at the near post. Left-back Danilo Avelar had advanced on the play and tapped home the service unopposed from close range.

Avelar’s late goal ensured victory at home for Corinthians. The result keeps the Timão comfortably in eighth place but a far-cry from the top of the table.

Regardless of their spirited performance, Sport Recife find themselves in 19th place in the Brasileiro Série A above only Paraná.
