Colorado and Minnesota played a dizzying match on Saturday night that had five goals, a straight red card, and a 90+7th minute game-winning header.

Darwin Quintero raced up the left wing in the 20th minute and hit a shot under Colorado goalkeeper Tim Howard. The ball deflected but sat in front of the goal line, allowing Miguel Ibarra to crash the net and finish before defender Deklan Wynne could clear.

Colorado clawed their way back with the help of left back Édgar Castillo, who cut inside onto his right foot in the second half and curled a beauty of a strike to the upper corner on the far post. Castillo’s shot kissed the underside of the crossbar on its way into the back of the net in the 50th minute.

Quintero slipped a long through ball into Ibarra’s path and the American played a simple square pass to team-mate Christian Ramirez. Ramirez finished emphatically on the empty net in the 65th after Howard had inched over to close down Ibarra.

Continuing to battle back, Shkëlzen Gashi hit a pass for recently introduced substitute Joe Mason as Minnesota centre-back Brett Kallman slipped to the ground just outside the 18-yard box. With a pocket of time and space, Mason easily lifted the ball past on-rushing goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth to equalize in the 74th minute.

A couple minutes later, Ibarra aggressively tried to grab the ball away from Danny Wilson and a shoving match ensues. At the end of the fracas, the referee showed a red to Ibarra and a yellow to Mason.

Gashi hit a corner deep in stoppage time and New Zealand international defender Tommy Smith threw himself at the service and directed the ball into the ground with a powerful header to win the match in the waning moments.

Colorado come from behind to tie the game twice before finding the winner with nearly the last kick of the match.
