Club América picked up where they left off last weekend and kept rolling on Saturday night at the Azteca Stadium.

Colombian forward Roger Martínez opened the scoring in the 23rd minute on a pass from Mateus Uribe with an accurate left-footed strike across the face of goal.

A half-hour into the match, Rayados saw their right-back Stefan Medina earn his second booking of the evening and head off for an early shower. Coming back from a goal behind with a player down on the road was too much to ask of Monterrey despite their attacking firepower.

Paraguayan centre-back Bruno Valdez scored five minutes into the second half. In his third full season with the Águilas, Valdez was inexplicably wide open on the corner kick from Mateus Uribe and he smashed his header into the back of the net from inside the six-yard box.

After stealing the show in his league start against Pachuca on match-day 3, Diego Lainez got the nod on the right wing. The Mexico youth international was active throughout the night but could not match his goal-haul from the previous weekend.

Despite playing an impressive match, Marcelo Barovero brought down Martínez in the area to concede a penalty late in the second half. Andrés Ibargüen converted from a spot to increase América’s lead to three in the 85th minute.

The 3-0 result puts América on nine points after four matches and the Mexico City club jumped ahead of Monterrey in the Liga MX Apertura 2018 standings.
