Chivas made a number of changes to their hierarchy on Monday, most notably firing oft-criticised General Director Jose Luis Higuera.

Supporters often complained over the sales of top players such as Orbelin Pineda and Rodolfo Pizarro while failing to adequately replace them.

“After four years in the Chivas family, Jose Luis Higuera Barberi will no longer be General Director of Club Deportivo Guadalajara,” read a club statement released Monday.

“At Chivas, we value his effort and commitment during this time with us and wish him the best in his future projects.”

Earlier in the day, owner Jorge Vergara promoted his son, Amaury, from vice president to president in his place as the elder Vergara will now feature in a slightly more distant role.

“Club Deportivo Guadalajara is the top institution in Mexican soccer, and we’re at the point of starting a transcendental season for the club, which doesn’t deserve just our enthusiasm but also our special attention to achieve the required result,” the statement read.

“For this reason, I’ve decided to name Amaury Vergara as President of Chivas, effective from today, 24 June, 2019.”

Chivas will now ready themselves for a relegation battle and have brought in veterans Oribe Peralta and Oswaldo Alanís in an attempt to avoid the drop or paying a fine of 120 million pesos.

They will prepare with a number of high-profile friendlies beginning with the Colossus Cup against Boca Juniors and River Plate.

Chivas will then take on Fiorentina, Benfica, and Atlético Madrid in the International Champions Cup.
