Romagnoli was named captain by manager Gennaro Gattuso and has impressed for the Rossoneri this season despite their inconsistent form.

According to Calciomercato, Chelsea had club officials at the Derby della Madonnina to watch the 23-year-old as they debate over a move.

The report claims that Romagnoli is seen as a perfect long-term option with Andreas Christensen and Gary Cahill likely to move on from Stamford Bridge.

However, Milan are reluctant to lose their prized asset and would demand upwards of €60m for the defender likened to former player Alessandro Nesta.

Under Maurizio Sarri, the Blues have intensified their scouting in Italy and are eyeing Brescia midfielder Andrea Tonali, as well as Cagliari stat Nicolò Barella.
