Ryan Christie has voiced concern about the ability of the smaller clubs in Scotland to survive the financial difficulties the coronavirus crisis will produce.
The Celtic midfielder fears that, in the event of a prolonged period without games, clubs may run out of cash to keep themselves afloat.
Christie, who started his career at Inverness and also spent time on loan at Aberdeen, understands the plight of clubs outside the two Old Firm giants.
However, despite his worries about the potential danger to Scottish football, he insists that the decision to put public safety first was the correct one.
“There are so many teams in Scotland that need the money coming through the gate every weekend to keep the books balanced,” the Daily Record reported Christie saying.
“Again, it is not great. It doesn’t really help many teams in Scotland but you have to put the decision into perspective.
“You would rather do that than put people’s lives in danger.
“You have to think of the bigger picture – especially when it comes to something as serious as this.”
Celtic were due to face Rangers on Sunday, but the SPFL decided on Friday to postpone the Scottish season indefinitely in light of the global pandemic.
