On Friday, the Brazilian FA (CBF) announced the details regarding the first round of the Copa do Brasil, Brazil’s domestic knockout competition.
91 teams take part in the competition, with 11 clubs (eight Copa Libertadores qualified teams, Serie B champions – Fortaleza, Copa Verde champions – Paysandu, and Copa do Nordeste champions – Sampaio Corrêa) receiving byes to the round-of-16.
All other 80 teams begin in the first stage. The first two stages feature a single match while the following stages are played over two legs.
Amateur side Ríver Atlético Clube will take on the Brasileirão’s Fluminense in the first match of the competition, set to take place on 5 February.
Fluminense are not the only Brasileirão club to play in the first round of the Copa do Brasil.
Newly-promoted Avaí, CSA, and Goiás, as well as Bahia, Botafogo, Ceará, Chapecoense, Corinthians, Santos, and Vasco accompany the Tricolor das Laranjeiras.
The winner of the tournament will be awarded a group stage place in the 2020 Copa Libertadores.
Cruzeiro won the 2018 Copa do Brasil, defeating Corinthians 3-1 on aggregate.
