Bayern Munich have endured their worst first half to a Bundesliga season since 2010 and it’s the first time since then they haven’t led the league at the end of the year.
Makes sense.
With January upon us, what should the German giants do to turn things around?
First things first, Bayern aren’t blowing sides away like they used to. They have less firepower and, in turn, teams aren’t so scared to attack them.
As it turns out, 34-year-old Arjen Robben will leave at the end of the season and it looks like 35-year-old Franck Ribéry may join him, making it a perfect time to refresh things.
Thorgan Hazard, Nabil Fekir, and Luka Jović have all been linked with Bayern and signing just one would add some depth, creativity and longevity which just isn’t there right now. Two would leave the squad all but ready for next season.
Aside from that, the club are likely to seal a deal for Benjamin Pavard but the World Cup winner won’t join until the summer.
The Stuttgart defender will provide much-needed cover at right-back as well as challenging for a place at the heart of the defence.
It’s time to let Sandro Wagner leave. Especially if one of Fekir or Jović can be signed.
The German striker has played just 139 minutes in the Bundesliga so far this season, starting a single game. There are whispers of interest from England – West Ham have been linked – and Bayern would be smart to sell now.
There is no way Mats Hummels should be sold.
The German international is reportedly unhappy about Niko Kovac’s rotation policy and that’s seen him linked with a move away. Chelsea are said to be interested. But Bayern cannot let him go, no matter how rocky his form’s been.
Hummels is one of just three centre-backs in the squad. Keep him or fail on all fronts this season.
