Though a 2-2 draw against Independiente del Valle in Ecuador wasn’t the result Flamengo necessarily wanted in the first leg of the Recopa Sudamericana final, supporters were much more concerned with an incident that occurred mid-way through the second half.

In the 65th minute, Bruno Henrique equalised the contest with a spectacular goal which came after a lengthy run.

However, the Flamengo forward was unable to celebrate his goal as a collision with the Independiente goalkeeper left the 29-year-old in a heap on the ground.

The player had to be stretchered off and was sent directly to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed the player with a knee sprain.

Flamengo’s doctors confirmed that there was no fracture and that the athlete will not need to undergo surgery, but there is still no expected return date as of yet.

Flamengo supporters should be very confident in the club’s medical staff. During last season’s Copa Libertadores semi-final, both Georgian do Arrascaeta and Filipe Luís sprained their knee and were considered doubts for the second leg.

In addition, Rafinha suffered a facial fracture against Athletico-PR 10 days later and was also considered doubtful for the all-important continental clash.

Despite this, the trio came back in record time and were all able to start. Of course, Flamengo routed Grêmio 5-0 and advanced to the final in Lima, Peru to complete their historic Libertadores run in sensational style against River Plate.
