At first glance, Jonjo Shelvey’s late leveller against Manchester City appeared to be straight off the training ground.
The Newcastle midfielder drove home from the edge of the area following a cut-back free-kick from Christian Atsu.
But Shelvey’s manager Steve Bruce has since revealed that it was some quick-thinking from the player that was the real architect of the sublime strike.
“I’d love to say it was wonderful, wonderful coaching on the training ground,” Bruce said, quoted by the Chronicle.
“These days, it is very rare that people are left on the edge of the box.
“So I think Jonjo went over and had a word and said ‘there’s nobody standing there’.
“It is alright to talk about it but delivering it like he did with the ball coming across you is a difficult skill.
“I’m not even sure it was our best goal of the game though! Our first one was a great piece of play.”
The Magpies’ first arrived when Jetro Willems bulleted a fantastic drive into the corner following neat interchange with Miguel Almirón.
