That would likely see owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens open up their wallets, with manager Dean Smith remaining a huge fan of Maupay.

Asked by Birmingham Live whether he would like to take the step up next term, the 22-year-old replied: “Yeah, I think I’m good enough to play against those kinds of players.

“I work hard every day in training, try to improve every day. So we will see.”

Smith left Brentford for Villa Park In October and Maupay admitted late last year that he would be interested in working with the 47-year-old again.

“I have a really, really good relationship with Dean.

“So obviously if one day he calls me and says ‘Neal, I need you in my team’ I would consider it. But at this moment I can’t be focused on other things than Brentford.”
