Celtic supporters certainly raised their eyebrows on Monday when Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers hinted that out-of-favour centre-back Filip Benković could be heading out in search of first-team football next month.
The 22-year-old was expected to play a role this season but the stellar play of Jonny Evans and Çağlar Söyüncü has left Benković a forgotten man at the King Power Stadium.
With Rodgers also keen on bringing in Juventus defender Daniele Rugani in the upcoming window, Benković should find himself elsewhere next month.
“It depends. If there’s the right team for him and there’s the right possibility then, of course, we will look at that,” Rodgers said.
“He stayed behind, he’s offered us really good cover, he’s been involved in some of the Under-23s games, so he’s been playing football.
“We’ll see how that develops over the course of January.”
Less than a month after being appointed as the new Foxes manager, he vowed that Celtic would be the front-runners to land the Croatia international if he were to be sent back out on loan.
“But there’s no doubt that if I want him to go out on loan again, I’d want him to go to Celtic.”
Derby County are also interested in bringing in Benković, who cost Leicester £13m in summer 2018.
Benković has made just a single 28-minute cameo for the Foxes against Fleetwood Town before heading to Celtic on loan a few days later.
