Real Sociedad striker Willian Jose has claimed that he turned down a move to Newcastle last season, but is still keen on playing in the Premier League one day.
The 27-year-old has been one of the most underrated forwards in Spain since joining La Real in 2016, netting 42 LaLiga goals in 102 games.
And the Brazilian has revealed that he rejected the opportunity to move to St James’ Park after they offered €35m for his services in summer 2018.
“The Premier (League) is the best championship in the world but La Liga is not far behind,” he is quoted as saying by the Northern Echo.
“For me, the best team is Real Madrid and then Barcelona.
“I could have been in the Premier (League) but I am in the right place. I want to play in the Premier League one day but for now I am happy here.
“I had an option to go to Newcastle last year (but) I am happy at Real Sociedad and I ended up staying (rather than going to Newcastle).”
After failing to land Willian José, the Magpies turned their attention to Joelinton, who they signed from Hoffenheim for €40m this year.
