Every year, there are a couple of big free transfers.

But who is up for grabs at the end of the season and where are they likely to be in 2020/21.

If you could build an entire team for nothing, it’s hard to imagine it looking better than this.

Goalkeeper

Alexander Nübel (Schalke)

Likely to … join Bayern Munich

The new Manuel Neuer? Nübel has been named Schalke captain this season but is set to walk out at the end of the campaign … with Bayern Munich his likely destination.

Defence

Thomas Meunier (PSG)

Who knows?

Meunier was linked with Arsenal and Man Utd in the summer but neither club needs a right-back now.

What’s left for him now? Well he’s still played semi-regularly this year, so a stay could be on the cards.

Joël Matip (Liverpool)

Likely to … extend his contract

Matip has been crucial so far this season and Jürgen Klopp will be desperate to keep him around.

The German-born defender has established himself ahead of Joe Gomez at Anfield and a new long-term deal should in the offing.

Toby Alderweireld (Spurs)

Likely to … leave the club

Plenty of the players at Spurs appear to need fresh scenery and Alderweireld is no different.

Linked with Manchester United two years ago, it was a surprise to see nobody activate the Belgian’s £25m release clause in the summer.

Raphaël Guerreiro (Dortmund)

Likely to … stay

Dortmund saw off interest from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer and have since announced that the Portuguese is on the verge of signing an extension.

There’s been no movement since but reports claim a contract to 2023 will be confirmed after the international break.

Midfield

Christian Eriksen (Spurs)

Likely to … join Real Madrid

Another who needs a fresh start away from north London.

Eriksen clearly wants out and made no effort to hide the fact he was hoping to join Real Madrid last summer.

Blaise Matuidi (Juventus)

Likely to … extend his contract

Didn’t move in the summer despite influx of midfielders and he’s still a regular under new boss Maurizio Sarri.

David Silva (Man City)

Will leave next summer

It’s already confirmed that Silva’s Manchester City career will end after 10 superb seasons in the summer.

Surely he won’t join another Premier League club, but could he return to Spain or will he venture further afield for the final years of his career?

Attack

Willian (Chelsea)

Likely to … ?

Barcelona have reportedly had bids for Willian rejected two summers in a row … but they now have Antoine Griezmann and would like to add Neymar, so their attempts to sign Willian have surely come to an end?

Chelsea have a huge amount of young talent on the wings but Lampard likes Willian. This one is too close to call.

Edinson Cavani (PSG)

Likely to … retire or extend?

“Right now, I am playing towards the end of my contract (2020) & possibly my career,” Cavani said back in January.

“I will be 33 going on 34 when it is up. I do not know if I will continue after 2020 & if it will be in Paris.”

Dries Mertens (Napoli)

Likely to … go to MLS

There has been no progress in contract talks between Napoli and Mertens, meaning an exit is now more than likely.

Where to? Well, he would be a massive capture for an MLS franchise. Watch this space.

On the bench

Jan Vertonghen, Luka Modrić, Juan Cuadrado, José Callejon, Mario Götze.
