Defeat to Schalke in the Revierderby on Sunday appears to have sealed Peter Stöger’s fate at Borussia Dortmund.

The Austrian’s contract expires at the end of the season and a mix of drab football and underwhelming results mean he is unlikely to remain at the club beyond this summer.

According to Bild, Dortmund have now decided Stöger will remain for the final four Bundesliga games but will not be in charge next season.

Having replaced Peter Bosz in December, Stöger appeared to start well.

Dortmund avoided defeat in their first 12 Bundesliga games under the former Köln head coach but the wins (seven of them) were all by incredibly fine margins.

In the meantime, the club squeezed past Atalanta in the Europa League before they were embarrassingly knocked out by RB Salzburg.

A 6-0 defeat to Bayern Munich and Sunday’s 2-0 derby loss to Schalke have followed, convincing club bosses more than ever that  a new direction is needed.

OGC Nice boss Lucien Favre was sounded out last summer and is a front-runner once again, with Dortmund’s dream candidate Julian Nagelsmann set to remain at Hoffenheim for one more season.

Dortmund are currently fourth in the Bundesliga with four games to play and risk missing out on the Champions League for just the second time in seven years.
