Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund will be without Lukasz Piszczek against Union Berlin and Wolfsburg this week.

The Polish international bruised his knee during the weekend’s draw against Hertha BSC, Dortmund confirmed on Monday.

With Marcel Schmelzer and Manuel Akanji already out injured, Dortmund’s defence is starting to look thin.

The club have used right-back Achraf Hakimi on the left side of the defence to deal with Schmelzer’s absence, while possible left-back candidate Abdou Diallo has been needed in the centre of the backline.

Omer Toprak came off the bench for his first appearance of the season in the dying moments of Saturday’s 2-2 draw but Lucien Favre will have to reshuffle his entire backline again to retain some balance.

Dortmund face second tier side Union Berlin in the DFB Pokal on Wednesday, with Toprak likely to come into the side. That could allow Hakimi to switch to right-back and Diallo to move to the left-hand side.

Whatever solution he finds, Favre will be desperate to have at least one of Piszczek, Schmelzer, or Akanji back next week, when the Black and Yellows take on Atlético Madrid and Bayern Munich.
