Retired manager Ottmar Hitzfeld has revealed that Borussia Dortmund wanted him to take over at the Westfalenstadion following the sacking of Peter Bosz.

Speaking on the ‘Sport Buzzer Fantalk 3.0’ show, Hitzfeld admitted: “There was contact, yes. But I did not think hard, not even when I was talking to them [Dortmund].”

The Schwarzgelben were then made to look elsewhere before deciding on Köln manager Peter Stöger – who jumped at the chance to step up with his side rock bottom of the Bundesliga.

He could not imagine, like Jupp Heynckes again, taking on the enormous stress that management provides: “With 72 years to cope with the stress, to stay overnight in hotels, to feel the tension before the game, the short joy of victory: and then is the next game two, three days later and it starts all over again.”

“That Jupp gets so good, I am very happy for him. He is a great guy! I had decided however that I no longer wanted to be active as a coach – not even for eight months and not for three months.”

Under Hitzfeld’s direction, Borussia Dortmund were twice Bundesliga champions (1995 and 1996) and even won the 1997 Champions League final against Juventus. After winning the title, he announced his resignation and became sporting director, but 20 years on, there was to be no reunion.
