The Argentina U-20 international joins from Argentine giants Boca Juniors, where he made five league appearances last season.

Dortmund reportedly agreed to pay €15m for the defender last week as they look to cover for the injured Manuel Akanji.

“The transfer of Leonardo Balerdi is one for the future,” sporting director Michael Zorc told the club’s official website.

“It was originally planned for next summer and has just been brought forward.

“Leonardo is an intelligent central defender, strong in challenges and in the air. Additionally, he’s got a good build-up and passing game.

“We’re very happy that he decided to join us and we are convinced he will help us in the future.”

Balerdi joins Akanji, Abdou Diallo, Dan-Axel Zagadou and Ömer Toprak as the club’s options in the centre of defence.
