Diego Maradona prevailed as the preferred candidate of Boca Juniors supporters to replace Guillermo Barros Schelotto as their new manager.

Pelusa earned 33 per cent of the vote, surpassing Gabriel Heinze, Antonio Mohamed, and Martín Palermo – the three most viable alternatives at the moment.

Maradona spent a year at Boca Juniors before setting off on a legendary European career. He then returned in 1995 for a two-year stint before retiring from football for good.

Boca Juniors legendary forward Martín Palermo finished just behind Maradona with 28 per cent of the vote.

Martín Palermo has a lot in his favor, as he spent 1997 to 2001 and 2004 to 2011 with the club and is Boca’s greatest goal scorer, scoring 236 goals in 404 games.

He is also currently without a club, which will make possible negotiations that much easier.

His most recent experience was at Unión Española, in Chile, where he was dismissed from his post two matches before the end of the season due to disagreements with the sporting director.

Previously he had managed Godoy Cruz and Arsenal de Sarandí, though without much success.

Current Vélez Sarsfield boss Gabriel Heinze was the third choice for the fans, taking 26 per cent of the vote.

Heinze led Argentinos Juniors to a promotion to the Superliga in his only season at the club before taking the reins at Vélez Sarsfield, who are currently fifth in the league and one point ahead of Boca.

Antonio Mohamed received only 13 per cent of the vote, perhaps due to his failure in La Liga with Celta de Vigo, where he only spent five months in 2018 before receiving the sack last month.

It should be remembered that Mohamed has had a lot of success as a manager.

He won the 2010 Copa Sudamericana with Independiente before winning a pair of Liga MX titles with Xolos and Club América.

The Argentine also led Monterrey to a Copa MX title last year.
