Sitting in sixth place entering the weekend, Boca Juniros hosted eighth-placed Godoy Cruz on Sunday.

Darío Benedetto scored the game’s first goal from the penalty spot in the opening quarter hour and substitute Mauro Zárate sealed the victory late in stoppage time.

Carlos Tévez went to ground after coming together with centre back Facundo Cobos and the referee did not hesitate to point to the spot.

Benedetto stepped up and beat Roberto Ramírez in the 14th minute even though the young goalkeeper guessed correctly.

The visitors had a number of tame efforts that did not trouble Boca Juniors goalkeeper Esteban Andrada until the very end of the first half.

In the 44th minute, Diego Sosa smacked a right-footed shot from 25-yards out that pinged back off the cross bar before Carlos Izquierdoz cleared.

Fabrizio Angileri popped up on the left wing to play a cross into the path of Ángel González in the 58th minute. The 24-year attacker saw his first attempt blocked by Andrada before skying his rebound.

Godoy Cruz appeared to equalise in the 86th minute but Santiago García was whistled offside and the goal chalked off, to the chagrin of visiting support and many neutrals.

Former West Ham forward Zárate added a bit more excitement in the closing stages of the match with a magnificent free kick. The 31-year-old guided the ball over the wall and under the bar in the third minute of stoppage time.

The win moves Boca Juniors up to 31 points having played 16 matches in the Superliga Argentina.

On the other side of the equation, Godoy Cruz have just 23 points to their name after matchday 17.
