After excelling on loan at Rayo Vallecano over the last two seasons, Benfica purchased Raúl de Tomás from Real Madrid for a whopping €20m over the summer.
However, after scoring just four times in 18 games, Benfica decided to part ways with the 25-year-old and sell him to Espanyol, who demolished their club-record transfer fee by paying the same €20m fee Benfica paid in July.
Now, Benfica are looking at Real Madrid once again for a new striker. According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, the Liga NOS leaders want to bring in Mariano Díaz on a short-term loan for the rest of the season.
Díaz, who only made his first two appearances off the bench in the recent Spanish Super Cup, has a salary of €4m-per-year, which Benfica would have to pay the full amount (for the rest of the season).
They would also have to convince the player, who is not in any rush to leave the club or seek opportunities elsewhere, as he is on the books until summer 2023.
Díaz has made it clear that Real Madrid is his dream club and despite not being as prolific of a player as he was at Lyon, he is more than happy to stay where he has been for eight of the last nine years.
