Former Germany international Christoph Metzelder has claimed that Bayern Munich are unlikely to sell ‘irreplaceable’ Robert Lewandowski.

Strong rumours have circulated over the past few weeks that the Poland striker will leave the Allianz Arena for Santiago Bernabéu at the end of the season.

But the ex-centre back, who spent three seasons with Los Blancos, has insisted that the Bundesliga champions won’t sell their prize asset at any price.

“There isn’t a pain barrier [on the transfer fee] because a Robert Lewandowski is irreplaceable,” he told Sky.

“There isn’t an adequate replacement available on the market. Therefore, they will not allow him to leave.”

“Normally, Bayern do not give up their top players and they do not need the money.”

According to Metzelder, who also played for Borussia Dortmund and Schalke, this has only happened once in the last 20 years, when Toni Kroos joined Madrid in 2014 and “Bayern were to blame for that.”
