Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeneß is delighted Mesut Özil has retired from international football and says the Arsenal midfielder has been “shit for years”.

Özil released a series of statements on Sunday in which announced he would no longer play for the German national team due to the backlash which followed his meeting with Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan prior to the World Cup.

The 29-year-old – who is of Turkish descent – insists the meeting had “no political intentions” and has been dismayed by the reaction to it – which has included his family receiving hate mail and threatening phone calls.

But Bayern president Hoeneß appears to have no sympathy for the playmaker, and actually thinks Özil’s retirement will be a good thing for the German national team.

“Özil has been playing shit for years,” Hoeneß told German outlet SportBild.

“He won his last tackle before the 2014 World Cup. All he is doing on the field is playing cross passes. Now he hides himself and his crap performance behind this photo.

“Whenever we played against Arsenal, we played over him, because we knew he was the weak point.

“His 35 million followers – that don’t exist in the real world – are convinced he has played sublimely when he completes a cross pass.

“The development in our country is a catastrophe. You have to go back to what it is: sport. And, from a sporting point of view, Özil had no place in the national team for years.”

Özil made his senior international debut in 2009 and went on to win 92 caps and score 23 times.

But it seems the likelihood of him playing for Die Mannschaft again is about the same as him signing for Bayern Munich anytime soon.
